Description

A plate with an everted rim and a residual inner decoration in red and manganese brown. Raised ring foot. Purified clay paste. The preservation state does not allow for determining the type of whitish coating.

Description

Fragmentary bowl with a thickened rim and a raised ring foot, with a residual decoration in red and manganese brown on the bottom. A trellis in manganese brown is visible. The preservation state does not allow for determining the type of whitish coating.

Biological degradation

A part of the artefact presents well-visible and roundish algal thalli of a colour varying from white to intense pink, caused by the growth of encrusting red algae. The calcareous tubes made by sedentary Polychaeta (sea worms) and colonies of Bryozoans are visible, too.

Two wrecks were found just south of Capo Alfieri.  The first one, of a late Roman origin (A), was followed in the Middle Ages by a second shipwreck. The load was made of pottery plates and bowls in purified clay paste with decorations in red and manganese brown.  These materials have been attributed to Sicilian workshops and dated back to the XII-XIII century (1).
