Wine amphora made in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The handles form an acute angle at the upper connection to the cylindrical neck – a distinctive feature of this type.

Biological degradation
The amphora shows, especially in the upper part, a dense and thick whitish encrustation caused by the development of organisms such as red algae, Bryozoans, and Polychaeta serpulidae (sea worms).

Biological degradation
The amphora presents an epilithic colonisation almost on the whole surface. Particularly relevant are thalli of encrusting red algae (visible as a hard, whitish patina). Moreover, there are present also colonies of Bryozoa and encrusting tubes made by sea worms (Polychaeta).

The area of Tonnara is located close to Capo Colonna, near an inlet that hosted a landing place connected to the temple of Hera Lacinia and the statioof Naus/Lacenium. Four wrecks were found in the waters in front of the area (Tonnara A, B, C, D).
The first one, close to the shore, was identified at a depth of only 4 meters among surfacing reefs. It is characterised by a load of amphorae similar to the pseudo-Kos (Dressel 2-4/5) type, many of which fragmentary and concreted to the rocks of the seabed (1).
As for now, it has been generically dated back between the I and the II centuries A.D.
