Description

Spheroidal stone projectile. Belonging to a petrary or a small bombard.

These projectiles were mostly used with heavy breechloaders in wrought iron.

References

Close to Capo Donato there is a wreck (Capo Donato B) that returned stone projectiles, perhaps attributable to a petrary. One of these projectiles is kept at the depots of the National Archaeological Museum of Crotone (see the data card of the artefact below). Its diameter is about 8,5 cm, so it can be assumed that the shipwreck took place between the XV and the XVI century A.D. A section of the quickworks (1) remained on site, where glazed and greasy ceramics fragments were found (2).
